Furlan.
I’m Guionardo, a software engineer and, above all, someone who likes understanding how things work — and building things that work.
Background and interests
I have worked in software development for many years, across desktop applications, web systems, APIs, backend services, integrations and infrastructure. Along the way, I have worked with both modern systems and the kind of software that was already running long before anyone decided to call it “legacy”.
Go holds a special place in my toolkit today, but my background spans C#, Python, PHP, JavaScript, databases such as MongoDB, and a range of technologies and architectures. Linux is also a natural part of my working environment, alongside containers, virtualization, Proxmox, automation and self-hosted services.
I am particularly interested in software architecture, distributed systems, security, observability, developer tools and legacy modernization. I especially enjoy problems where writing code is not enough: you need to investigate, understand an existing system, discover why certain decisions were made and find a solution simple enough to remain maintainable afterward.
That tends to show up in the projects I build.
I have built vulnerability analysis tools integrated into development workflows, explored offline-first architectures and mesh networks between devices, developed solutions involving authorization and application telemetry, and have been working on tools to understand and modernize large legacy codebases.
One topic that particularly interests me today is using AI as a software engineering tool — not just to generate code, but to understand existing systems. This includes exploring how static analysis, agents and language models can work together to reconstruct the business rules, dependencies, flows and behaviors of older applications, turning that knowledge into useful documentation for maintenance and migration.
I also enjoy building my own tools. If a task starts involving repetitive commands, improvised scripts or too much manual work, there is a good chance I will end up creating a CLI to handle it.
But there is more here than software
I am an amateur radio operator, and I enjoy electronics, networking, home servers, automation, DIY and workshop projects. I am particularly drawn to things that can be taken apart, studied, modified and, ideally, put back together without any parts left over.
I am also involved in Scouting. Working with Cub Scouts and taking part in Scouting activities has brought something quite different from engineering into my world: education, volunteering, outdoor life, games, stories and the challenge of turning ideas into experiences for children and young people.
Perhaps that is why my interests tend to blend worlds that usually seem separate: software and radio, artificial intelligence and decades-old systems, distributed networks and communication beyond the Internet, home automation and handmade projects, technology and Scouting.
A place to document these explorations
This blog is a place to document these explorations.
You will probably find articles here about Go, Linux, software architecture and engineering, legacy systems, artificial intelligence, security, self-hosting, automation, radio, electronics and DIY projects. Every so often, there may also be an experiment that started with a simple question and ended several days later with a Git repository that definitely did not need to exist.
I am not particularly interested in writing only about the latest trendy technology. I prefer to understand problems, try out solutions, discover where they break and record what I learn along the way.
Because, in the end, much of what I do starts the same way:
“Could this be done?”
Usually, the only way to find out is to try.
